As a technology provider it’s easy to get lost into the labyrinth of new features and cool updates and latest improvements. Releases upon releases are requested by clients, researched and pushed into production by our tech crew.
But, once in a blue moon, we stop to see if there is, maybe, a different perspective that we are not paying sufficient attention to. When we reach this point, we go back to basics. Video 101: how can we improve it? Well, it would certainly add to our kick-ass tech stack if we would know the perspective entirely from the video creators side. After all, ultimately, a video player is destined to them. A vessel for original stories to engage, entice and convert. And, why not, measure the results at the end to do it all over.
So, we packed our bags and went behind the enemy lines to a London YouTubers meetup. First off, we were the only technical representatives there. Second off, as soon as we introduced ourselves we were greeted with a lot of encouragement and enthusiasm for our brave initiative. And some fair degree of curiosity on their end as to our (apparently) rare breed amongst themselves.
As it turns out, during the course of almost 4 hours, I found that a prominent problem, that requires a lot of effort and attention, is getting more visitors to watch videos. If possible returning visitors, and, if even more possible, returning visitors who recommend their work to others.
I would like to mention that there were present around 40 YouTubers, with all kinds of experience with various video channels: guitar lessons, teaching, traveling, celebrities, personality, etc. Some of them, former professionals video makers now gone freelancing for their passion. It was quite a long and thorough debate.
That being said, I am sharing here some of their wiseness and some professional tips on how to turn visitors into reality from a video perspective.
Tip no. 1 to get more traffic to your website or video channel
Friends who share the same passion for video making help you stay focused
When you’re in the creative state, having ideas floating all around you becomes a second nature. Sometimes they mix and merge together. However, seeing those ideas through and finalized it’s a different story. It’s easy coming up with all sorts of concept ideas, but no so easy making them into a concrete project. But, fear not, for where there is a will, there is a way.
And, an easy way to stay focused is to surround yourself with people who share the same passion for creating videos. This way, the concept ideas can be refined through discussions. Moreover, the encouragement of your friends and their enthusiasm to see the final product can be extremely good motivators. And, the whole creation process turns into a more positive and confident endeavor.
So, do try meetups for video creators and make friends. The group energy will help you stay focused and committed.
Tip no. 2 to get more traffic to your website or video channel
Keep it friendly for the SEO algorithms by publishing on schedule
SEO algorithms are like kids. You have to teach them when it’s ok to ask for ice-cream. After that, they will follow that schedule and remember when it’s the right time to ask for it again. So, should you schedule a new video regularly, search algorithms will learn the frequency on which you publish, and have a new parsing more often. They “learn” there is new stuff to be indexed, so they search for it on schedule.
If, on the other hand, you have the tendency to publish off and on, the relevance of your content will drop and ranking for your content will be lowered. Algorithms will still parse your content, but, maybe once every two months, instead of every week. And, they will display it with a lower priority than a regular publisher.
So, if possible, do try to keep a routine. Now, how often should the new publishing happen is another story. Which brings us to the next point.
Tip no.3 to get more traffic to your website or video channel
Aim to release new videos twice per week
How often is too often? Video creation, like any kind of kraft demands a lot of energy and effort. So, according to people who pushed the boundaries of releasing new content, twice per day is too much.
Once per week is doable, but the aim should be at twice per week. Keeps the algorithms in check and visitors on the refresh button.
Tip no. 4 to get more traffic to your website or video channel
Having ads alongside your content increases ranking and visibility
I know this seems somewhat counter-intuitive, but, as it turns out major publishing sites such as YouTube are businesses who, at the end of the day, need to make a buck.
So, if you try to protect your visitors too much, keep in mind, that algorithms ever-changing rules are all in favor of displaying ads for more relevance and display frequency.
Instead of shielding the audience altogether, maybe, try some advertising engines and settings that protect the viewability of your viewers and the quality of the ads served.
There are a few more gems like this that I have yet to pile into a readable form, but in the interest of keeping articles short enough to still be relevant, I will do a Part II with the remaining of them.
Happy publishing!
